PC: World Nomads
I read Sahil Bloom's Curiosity Chronicle newsletter on the daily. A couple weeks ago, he wrote about the "Locals vs. Tourists" framework. This framework essentially compares the psychologies of a tourist and a local – tourists come and go with the weather and locals stay through the good and bad. Some aspects of the framework that stuck with me:
Emphasis on short vs. long term thinking. Investing. Relationships. Learning. In these scenarios, you can choose to focus on the short term or the long term. This framework helped me realize that I'm mainly a tourist when it comes to learning new things.
I enjoy consuming knowledge and connecting the dots between things I've learned. At the same time, I get distracted and overwhelmed pretty easily. So while I'm constantly exposing myself to new information, I'm not necessarily diving into specific topics with the mentality of a local. This is apparent to me in my quest to learn more about web3. There are so many terminologies and concepts to learn; while I'm familiar with most of them, it'd be difficult for me to effectively explain it to someone.
Click on to Page 2. Sahil shares how"Page 2 Learning" can help one develop more of a local's mindset. This concept touches on the idea that more alpha is found beyond Page 1 of Google search results. Everybody scans through the links on Page 1, but few click on to Page 2, 3, 4, etc. There might be valuable information in those pages, but we won't ever come across it if we don't see past Page 1.
Next time you find yourself to be "tourist", stop and think. How can I change what I'm doing to be a "local", to go deeper? Whether that's my understanding of a concept or an existing relationship? What situations have you found yourself to be both a "local" and a "tourist"?
